Zion Hike - The Parawan Gap - 07/15/2010

with Don, Nancy, Heidi, Roger, Ceil and Kent

The first thing that really caught my attention here was an old sweat lodge frame.  Each joint of this frame had been tied with leather strips.  I had never seen one with so many cross braces.  The ones I have seen (and made) have less than half that many horizontals.

The petroglyphs here are the real attraction.

Hard to see here but almost every inch of rock face is covered with drawings.

If you download any of these pictures you may find the resolution a bit low (note stripes in sky here) - had to make them that way or the page wouldn't download in a dog year.   If you would like a higher resolution file of any of these prints just e-mail me at don@donaldhanes.com and I can send them to you - they are about 7-8 times higher res.

Then up the other side to some caves.

Cave interior with amazingly rich layered rock.

With all the flatness around it you would swear it was a road-cut.  Especially since it is the precise size for a road.  But those petroglyphs definitely predate the road.  I'm standing at the marker that shows where you can see the sun set into the gap at the summer solstice.
